Porto Azzurro is one of the most beautiful places of the Tyrrhenian Sea.  The end of a large bay on the eastern side of the island, is dominated in the South by a watchtower with a lighthouse and in the North by a fort, built in the beginning of the XVII century on the initiatif of Philip III of spain, today transformed into a jail.  That is also why in the past the place was called Porto Longone, a name that you still find on ancient maps.  The bay itself, about 500 m of length, is surrounded in the west by more than 1 km of green hills, offering this way a natural protection to sailers.  Only the sea-wind coming from the east could be tricky. You should enter the bay to be able to see the picturesque village of Porto Azzurro, hidden behind the promontory of the citadel (Capo San Vincenzo), situated in the small gulf and borded by a quay.  Being an ancient fishermen village, Porto Azzurro is mainly directed towards turism and is highly frequented during the summer season.
